They are quite territorial too, and many females will vigorously defend their homes. When their offspring are big enough to fend for themselves, their mums will evict them, often vigorously. Access points must be proofed
There is no point capturing a possum if you do not proof their access point. This has to be done quickly because, by law, a possum can only be held for 24 hours buy a permitted person. If you do not proof the holes up in this time, the possums will simply race back into the roof and you’ll have to start again.
It is best to organise a maintenance person who can put in place a permanent solution. But, your local Jim’s Pest Control technician can effect a temporary measure until this can be done. If you are unsure of where they are getting in, ask your tech where their access points are. This will give you the option of sealing up the points yourself, hence saving you money.
The battle of possums and rats
In the animal kingdom the largest animals are often feared. This is no different when you are talking about possums and rats.A possum’s large size is extremely concerning to a rat. They have bigger teeth and larger claws, so can inflict some serious damage to a rat.
Rats will often avoid areas where possums live so, if you remove possums, rats will be overjoyed and will happily move in. In effect, you may be trading one pest for another. It is common for our Jim’s Pest Control technicians to go back and treat for rats after a possum has been removed. In some cases, our technicians will even suggest this be done before they leave.
